Is this a Virus/Spyware?

I run WinXP Pro, and when I go to the shut it down a small colored shield next to the shut down button says "Click "Turn Off" to install important updates and turn off your computer. If you do not wish to install these updates, click here.  Does anyone know if this is normal or do I have some sort of virus?

Ths is actually a built in feature of windows.  Your machine must be set to automatically download Windows updates and install then so it typically does this when you log off.  You can safely disregard this message.

Be careful for fake ones though. Some malicious software attempts to imitate the real Windows update.

However, from what you're describing it sounds like the real Windows update. Just follow the directions that the previous reply mentioned. If an update causes a problem, just reinstall it via the control panel. Go to add/remove programs and it should be listed there.

Yeah unfortunately fake ones exist.

But you can usually spot them as they don't look very professional. Plus the legit one stands out more, and if you're in doubt. Open up the task manager and look up the process to verify that it's legit.

Sounds like a fake one to me. Try running an anti-virus program and see if it picks anything up. Also disable Windows Updates temporarily to see if that little ticker still appears, if it does, then it's most likely definitely fake and you should remove it ASAP.
